Time: 09:15-11:45

Mandatory for all students

Human societies have transformed the world through our ability to imagine, invent and cooperate. From agriculture and the Industrial Revolution to today’s rapidly changing energy and technology systems, societal transformation has fundamentally reshaped how we live, bringing remarkable progress while also presenting great challenges for the future.

In this opening keynote, we explore how large-scale change happens and what it means for the future. We consider how technology, economics, business, institutions, laws, social norms and human behaviour interact to shape society - and how established systems can become locked in or set in motion towards new directions. The session offers a broad perspective on the challenges and opportunities ahead, relevant to all fields of study and future professions.

Before the session, familiarise yourself with Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, and come prepared to think across disciplinary boundaries and consider how you can contribute to shaping the future.

SPEAKERS

  • Björn Sandén (keynote), Professor of Innovation and Sustainability at Chalmers University of Technology. His research focuses on sustainability transitions, technological change and strategies for long-term sustainable development.

  • Anders Sandoff (moderator), Senior Lecturer, Department of Business Administration, School of Business, Economics and Law.

TALARE

Vår antibiotika i deras vatten
Om läkemedelsproduktion och antibiotikaresistens

TALARE

  • Carina Lindberg (moderator), Hur presentera?

Framtidens energisystem
Om klimatomställning, säkerhet och elektrifiering

In recent years, many countries have experienced a decline in democratic governance, while autocratic tendencies have grown stronger. Corruption both contributes to and benefits from this trend, creating a cycle that weakens transparency, accountability and public trust. The consequences extend beyond politics, affecting human rights, economic development and progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

In this session, we explore the relationship between democracy and corruption, examining why corruption persists, how it undermines democratic institutions and under what conditions it can be successfully challenged. We also discuss global trends in democratisation and autocratisation, their underlying causes, and what they may mean for the future of sustainable development.

SPEAKERS

  • Anna Persson, Senior Lecturer, Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg. Her research focuses on corruption, governance and democratisation.

  • Marina Nord, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the V-Dem Institute, University of Gothenburg. Her work examines global trends in democracy and autocratisation.

  • Olof Johansson-Stenman (moderator), Professor of Economics, School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg.

In recent years, the global income and wealth differences have been intensively discussed even outside national economic circles. In which direction are the trends pointing to? What does the research say about the connection between inequality and development? What does development really look like for the world’s richest, the poorest and everyone else? Who are the winners and losers of the globalized economy?

During this session you will gain an understanding of the development of income and wealth inequality in recent decades both within countries and between countries, and in absolute and relative terms (if you don’t understand the difference or what it means, you will after the lecture).

SPEAKERS

  • Jesper Roine, Associate professor at the Stockholm School of Economics. Jesper’s research focuses on income and wealth inequality, political economy and long-term economic development. Jesper is one of the founders of the course on Global Challenges that started in 2016 for the school’s economics program. He regularly writes on ekonomistas.se, which he also co-founded. Jesper also just finished a book about Income inequality called ”Därför är ojämlikheten viktig” (Why income inequality matters).

  • Katarina Nordblom (moderator), Professor at the School of Business, Economics and Law in Gothenburg. Her main research areas are public and behavioral economics and Swedish taxes. Katarina also teaches on the bachelor´s and the master’s program in economics.
